The state legislature currently has a bill under consideration that would allow citizens with concealed-carry firearm permits to be armed in parks. Critics object to the bill because they contend that the presence of guns in children's recreational areas would compromise their safety. Keep in mind that those citizens with concealed weapons permits currently carry firearms in many places where children are present.
In the 15-plus years of the state's concealed-carry history, there have been no examples where the presence of legally carried firearms has posed a child/public safety issue. On the contrary, given that most instances of mass gun violence are committed in defined "victim disarmament zones," the presence of law-abiding, armed citizens serves as an effective deterrent for violent crime, and thus improves public safety.
Many responsible citizens have elected not to delegate the primary responsibility for their personal protection, and should not be forced to relinquish the right to defend themselves, family and others from predators simply because of their location. It is never conscionable to criminalize self-defense.
