Service counts at Gilead

Staff WriterApril 29, 2011

It can be tough for an independent business owner to go it alone in the face of many large, rapidly expanding national chains. However many independent pharmacies seem to find a way to succeed.

The Triangle is already home to several independent pharmacies, and now there is one more: Gilead Pharmacy at 2100 New Bern Ave. in Raleigh in the Longview shopping center.

Owner and pharmacist Finny Joseph thinks independents can compete by offering competitive prices and more service.

Gilead, for instance, offers free home delivery, a drive-through and a service called "My Dose Alert" that allows patients to receive notifications by phone call, text or email telling them which medications to take and when.

"There is a lot of potential here," he said. "People are getting to know about us, and once they walk in, they are happy to be here."

Gilead Pharmacy is closed on Sundays.

At Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, designer furniture retailer Arhaus has signed a lease for the former Crate & Barrel location. Crate & Barrel moved to Streets at Southpoint in Durham this year.

It's the first Carolinas location for Arhaus, which has 38 stores, mostly in the Midwest and Northeast. The Ohio-based chain will take 20,000 square feet, including the Crate & Barrel spot, the space currently occupied by Foot Action and part of the space that is now Deb. The Deb store is going to be smaller and Foot Action will move near Belk in June. Arhaus is looking at a January opening.

Also at Crabtree, Red Monkey opens next week. The two-story restaurant serves a variety of cuisines and took the spots that used to be Pharaoh's and Aggie's next to the Cheesecake Factory.

In Durham, Cold Stone Creamery in Renaissance Center across from Streets at Southpoint will close. Franchisee Jeff Buck said he is looking for a new location. The final day of business will be Mother's Day.

Also in Durham, there are two new Moe's Southwest Grill locations: one in Durham Bulls Athletic Park and one in Patterson Place at U.S. 15-501 and Interstate 40.

In Apex: Flaunt Boutique is open, selling women's clothing and accessories at 120 N. Salem St.; Aria Gifts is open at 219 N. Salem St.; and in Beaver Creek Commons, Quarter Note Music and Instruction is open, selling instruments and supplies such as books and sheet music, and offering rentals, lessons and camps. Closed Sundays.

Other items: In Morrisville, My Cosmo Spa and Nails is open at 9825B Chapel Hill Road. ... In Apex, Bradley's Flooring & Paint at 910 Windy Road is combining with a new Benjamin Moore Retail Signature Paint Store. ... In Chapel Hill, The Lodge Bar & Grill is open at 114 Henderson St. ... And it appears that Chocolaterie Stam off N.C. 54 has closed.
