The downtown Raleigh Rapid Fitness club is relocating to a new space.
The building at 509 W. North St., just off Glenwood South, is being sold by landlord Greg Hatem. So Rapid Fitness has to move.
Club owner Mike Rattenni said the gym will move nearby to the spot that was formerly the BuckHead Saloon on Morgan Street in Raleigh. However, the renovations to that space are expected to take about three months, and the North Street location will close May 28.
It's the latest in a series of changes that have taken place at that address in recent years. The club was formerly a Peak Fitness until that chain left the Triangle abruptly in 2009. Rattenni said this split has been amicable and credited Hatem with being flexible and helpful in assisting with the transition.
The roughly 2,000 affected members are being offered "passport" memberships that allow them to visit any other Rapid Fitness location during the closure and one month of free membership for each month the Raleigh club is closed. They will also be grandfathered in at their current membership rate when the new club opens.
Rattenni said he hopes to open the new downtown Rapid Fitness in mid-August.
