McCann ties, wins it
Brian McCann tied it with a pinch-hit, two-out homer in the ninth inning, then hit a two-run shot in the 11th to lead the Atlanta Braves past the Houston Astros 3-1.
The Braves were trailing 1-0 and down to their final strike in the ninth when McCann drove a 1-2 pitch the opposite way, the ball just clearing the wall in left-center.
Rockies 5, Giants 3: Carlos Gonzalez's two-run single off Javier Lopez capped a four-run eighth-inning rally, and host Colorado surged back into first place in the NL West.
Cardinals 2, Phillies 1: Lance Berkman lined a bases-loaded single over a drawn-in outfield with one out in the ninth inning, giving host St. Louis the victory over run-starved Philadelphia.
White Sox 4, Rangers 3: Gordon Beckham scampered home on Cody Eppley's wild pitch in the eighth inning, lifting host Chicago to a sorely needed victory over Texas.
Reds 7, Cubs 5: Reliever Kerry Wood's throwing error let two runs score, and Chris Heisey followed with a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning that sent the host Reds over the sloppy Cubs.
Hamilton to play today
Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton is on schedule to play his first rehab game Wednesday with Double-A Frisco.
Hamilton took early batting practice before the Rangers' game at Chicago on Tuesday night, then returned to Texas to be re-evaluated by team physician Dr. Keith Meister. If Meister clears him, the AL MVP will play two games at Frisco starting Wednesday, then three with Triple-A Round Rock.
Hamilton broke a bone in his upper right arm April 12 on a headfirst slide into home at Detroit.
Indians' Drennen suspended for doping: Cleveland Indians minor league outfielder John Drennen has been suspended for 50 games after a positive test.
The commissioner's office says Drennen tested positive for the banned female fertility drug Clomiphene. The drug can be used to boost testosterone as part of a steroids cycle.
A's Braden to miss rest of season: Dallas Braden is done for the season. The Oakland Athletics announced that Braden is expected to miss the rest of the year. The diagnosis came after Braden had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn capsule in his left throwing shoulder.
Phillies' Stutes injured: Philadelphia Phillies rookie reliever Michael Stutes strained a right side muscle and was removed after throwing only three pitches in the sixth inning against St. Louis.
All-Star coaches announced: Arizona's Kirk Gibson and Washington's Jim Riggleman will be coaches for San Francisco's Bruce Bochy, the NL manager, at the All-Star Game in Phoenix in July 12.
Cleveland's Manny Acta and Toronto's John Farrell will be coaches for Texas' Ron Washington, the AL manager, Major League Baseball said Tuesday.
Mazzaro's nightmare
Vin Mazzaro's painful journey Monday night took him all the way from the bullpen to the minor leagues, with a stop in that section of the team record book where nobody wants to be.
It was not a good night for the 25-year-old right-hander.
He pitched what the raw numbers will say was the worst game in the history of the Kansas City Royals: 14 runs allowed, including 10 in a nightmarish fourth inning. Mazzaro erased the Royals record and was demoted to Triple-A Omaha immediately after Cleveland's 19-1 victory.
"It's tough. It was a tough game," said Mazzaro, whose ERA rose to 22.74. "Some of the plays didn't go my way. It's a funny game. You've just got to keep battling and attack the zone."
