Seven soccer teams from area clubs won U.S. Youth Soccer State Cup titles on May 22 in Greensboro, earning trips to the USYS regionals next month in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Six of the qualifying teams came from the Capital Area Soccer League: the '97 (U13) CASL Spartan Elite Black girls; the '96 (U14) CASL Spartan Elite Black girls, who defeated the '96 Carolina Select 3-1 in Sunday's final; the '96 (U14) CASL Chelsea boys; the '95 (U15) CASL Elite boys, who defeated the '95 Triangle United 2-1 in Sunday's final; the '93 (U17) CASL Elite boys; and the '91 (U19) CASL Chelsea, composed primarily of former CASL Chelsea Academy players now playing in college.
In group play, the '91 CASL Elite defeated their Triangle United Soccer Association counterparts 3-2, with goals scored by Ross Tomasseli (Wake Forest), Kyle Emerson (Wake Forest), and Jay Williams (West Virginia).
The other State Cup title claimed by an area team last weekend went to Triangle Futbol Club's '92 (U18) Navy boys, who clinched the championship with a 4-3 win over Piedmont Triad Football Club that went to penalty kicks. Inaki Uriz, Jamie Dell, Teddy Mullin, Costin Gregory and Christian Bowers converted their penalty kicks for TFC, and goalkeeper T.J. Sharville saved the decisive fourth penalty kick.
In the semifinals, the '92 TFC Navy defeated the '92 CASL Elite 3-1, with TFC goals from Bobby Castro, Costin Gregory and Jamie Dell.
Kepner President'sState Cup
CASL's U14 ('96) Premier boys defeated Greensboro Youth Soccer Association 3-2 in Sunday's championship match to win their age group title in the annual Kepner Cup.
Hussein Arif, Bryson White, and Taylor Johnson scored for CASL in the championship match. In their 3-1 overtime semifinal victory over the Fuquay-Varina Athletic Association, Bryson White, Harris Wilson, and Fernando Morales, scored for CASL.
In other Kepner Cup action, the '96 (U14) TUSA Gold girls, and the '95 (U15) TUSA Green boys reached the semifinals last weekend. The '97 (U13) CASL Chelsea Jrs Black and the '93 (U17)CASL United Black reached their boys' division finals.
Cape Fear Seaside Soccer Classic
The CASL U13 Vipers won their age division in last weekend's Cape Fear Seaside Soccer Classic in Wilmington, defeating TUSA Gold 2-1 in the Championship match. Corey Wilson and Michael Flecker scored for the Vipers.
In their three earlier matches, the Vipers defeated Arsenal from Holly Springs 2-0, with goals from Michael Flecker and Austin White; then won 3-0 over the Triangle Futbol Club Strikers 3-0 with three goals from Michael Flecker; and took a 3-0 shutout of the '97 Cape Fear Breakers Gold with two goals by Joseph Delgrosso and one by Jacob Hofer.
