Jill Beth Hickey

May 29, 2011

Jill Beth Hickey, 64, died Sunday, May 22, 2011 in Portland Oregon.

Jill was born June 17, 1946, the oldest of four daughters of Jim Hickey and Patricia Hickey. She grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1964. She first attended the College of William and Mary but returned to Chapel Hill to graduate from the University of North Carolina in 1968.

Fresh out of college Jill moved to Boston and then on to San Francisco. Here, she met her husband, John Meuser. After a few years they moved back to North Carolina eventually attending law school at UNC. Jill graduated in 1986 and served on the Law Review. In 1990, after working in private practice, Jill joined the NC Attorney General’s Office serving with distinction as a Special Deputy Attorney General in the Environmental Division where she was responsible for handling some of the Division’s largest and most complex environmental lawsuits. She also served as Counsel for the Coastal Resources Commission. In August of 2007, disabled by the cancer which ultimately took her life, she reluctantly retired from the State and the practice of law. A year later Jill and John moved to Harkers Island, NC. While at Harkers Island, Jill became a Cape Lookout National Seashore volunteer and loved the weeks she spent on the remote North and South Core Banks, assisting visitors and vacationers.

Jill was diagnosed with cancer 20 years ago and she never let it define her. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her for her great strength and determination in the face of her illness. She had the ability to relate to everyone she met and was a wonderful friend to so many who will miss her greatly.

The great love of Jill’s life was her family – her husband John and her children, Ben and Hannah. Watching and helping Ben and Hannah grow up, graduate college and begin their careers was a source of great pleasure and pride to her. In the last six months of her life, she and John moved to Portland, Oregon to be close to them.

Jill is survived by her husband, John Meuser, and her children, Ben Meuser and Hannah Meuser. She is also survived by her mother, Patricia Hickey (Sanford, NC) and her sisters Sue Hickey (Portland, Oregon), Anne Hickey (Wallingford, England) and Lynn Knight (Sanford, NC).
