J on Dee Graham is from Texas and has a voice that's rather unpretty. That puts him in fine company, a distinguished lineage of Lone Star singer-songwriters who make a little voice and a lot of great wordplay go a long way. Graham also has the added distinction of being a fantastic guitarist, going back to his days in iconic Texas bands the True Believers and Skunks. He'll rage against the dying of the light Thursday at Raleigh's Berkeley Cafe on a raconteur-friendly bill with Sam Baker. Showtime is 8 p.m., and tickets are $12 advance, $15 day of show. See berkeley cafe.net for details.
