Blue plan's flaws

In the 10 years that I served on the Wake County Board of Education I listened to many parent concerns regarding student assignment issues. Hold onto your hats, because the number of buses coming through your neighborhood is about to multiply if the Blue plan now being considered is approved.

No longer will assignments be based on neighborhoods, apartment complexes or any community configuration; instead your school assignment will apply to you alone. It is likely that your neighbors on each side will go to different schools.

At the height of our community's growth over the last 12 years, the Board of Education implemented a contingency plan very similar to the Blue plan: capping schools. Families and real estate agents hated it. Capping was put into place when a school had reached its absolute capacity and it was capped out. Any family that moved into the base assignment area after the school was capped had to attend the overflow school. This is what the Blue plan will do.

Keeping neighbors together, retaining meaningful magnet choices, avoiding high-poverty schools and reducing the frequency of reassignment are worthwhile goals that I believe can be accomplished, but sadly the Blue plan does not do that.
