A group of fifth-graders from Durant Road Elementary School in Raleigh made history last spring as the first elementary students to showcase their skills in the state We The People congressional hearing event.

The students held a mock hearing in the event, sponsored locally by the N.C. Bar Association and nationally by the Center for Civic Education. They testified before a panel of judges, demonstrating their knowledge of constitutional principles and ability to form opinions on historical and current issues.

The Durant students, all from Cindy Jarrett's class, were Cassandra Lupia, Clark Haikal, Kenan Delbridge, DeSean Davis, Rachel Gerney and Kris Cuthbertson.
