A few days ago, a girl wrote a very intelligent, articulate letter regarding the addition of healthier food to school menus ("Targeting temptation," June 11). I fully support having healthy food choices in the schools and want to commend the young lady on her responsibility and good citizenship for taking the time to write the letter.

I do, however, want to strongly caution about one of the sentiments expressed. It was stated that it is hard to be "good" with the junk food temptations available. Wanting, eating and enjoying foods like cookies, brownies, pizza, etc. does not make a person "bad" any more than eating broccoli makes him "good."

Our country is filled with people who have poor relationships with food, and not all of them are overweight. These guilt feelings are at the core of many eating disorders - anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. We need to embrace moderation and understand that there is room in a healthy diet for a little bit of our favorite foods.
