As the president of the N.C. Pest Management Association (NCPMA), I would like to respond to the statements made about the pest management industry in your June 15 article "Bill gives ex-cons a job boost."

Dennis Gaddy of the Community Success Initiative suggests that former convicted felons should be allowed to obtain pest control licenses because we simply spray bugs. Gaddy fails to take into account how our industry operates, the level of training provided to our technicians and how closely we interact with our customers.

Pest management technicians often must enter clients' homes to perform needed pest management services, and, therefore, we take our clients' safety, well-being and trust very seriously. Our customers must feel comfortable when hiring one of our member companies and welcoming them into their homes for pest treatments.

The pest management industry is a highly technical field that requires years of training and experience. To suggest that members of our industry just spray bugs is a major understatement. Our technicians receive thorough training on how to identify and properly treat pest problems using a large variety of available techniques and treatments. This training is received through courses at various colleges and universities and the annual continuing education courses offered by NCPMA.
