CARY -- A 300,000-gallon steel water tower that has stood alongside Kildaire Farm Road at Pleasants Avenue for more than 50 years will begin coming down Monday.

The town has not used the storage tank for three years and says it would require significant work to keep it in service. The town replaced the tank with a larger one at Field Street, off Chapel Hill Road.

The demolition work is expected to cost the town about $90,000 and be completed by the end of August.

When the tank is gone, the town will have seven water storage tanks remaining, with a total capacity of 9.25 million gallons.
