Accident on I-85 kills 1, injures others

Staff writerJune 30, 2011

A tractor-trailer crash left one person dead and injured several others and closed Interstate 85 in both directions near Hillsborough in Orange County this morning.

It happened in the southbound lanes at mile marker 165, east of the I-85/I-40 split. A tractor-trailer collided with a fuel tanker truck and two other passenger cars.

The tractor-trailer caught fire, killing the driver, Billy Dean Brady, 44, of Kings Mountain. At least four other people were injured, though their conditions were unclear late Thursday.

Six people who were injured in the crash were taken to UNC Hospitals, said Tom Hughes, a spokesman there. Two were treated and released, while the remaining four are still in the hospital and listed in fair condition.

The fatal crash followed a single-vehicle wreck. The driver in that incident, who was driving a cement mixing truck, was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries.

Northbound lanes re-opened by noon, but one southbound lane remained closed until about 7 p.m., tying up rush-hour and holiday-weekend traffic for miles.
