I attended Governor's School East (GSE) in 1984. As a high school student who became the first person in her family to graduate from college and law school, I benefited immeasurably from the inspiring ideas, diverse personalities and academic challenges to which GSE introduced me. My classmates became doctors, dentists, counselors, software developers, social workers, state representatives, teachers, poets and artists who continue to transform our state.
Challenging economic times dictate difficult decisions. These decisions should not threaten an institution that benefits students from each of North Carolina's 100 counties, however.
A delay of even one year to implement this decision would allow state schools Superintendent June Atkinson, State Board of Education Chairman Bill Harrison and Governor's School administrators and alumni to pursue public-private partnerships and other funding sources to permit Governor's School to inspire promising North Carolina students for another 48 years.
