There is a difference in knowing about a person and knowing a person. I count among my many blessings the fact that I knew Earle Purser [who died July 6]. I knew him as a devoted member of the legal profession, a Mason, a faithful member of his church, an authority on multiple topics, a constant friend and a true Southern gentleman.

Many times he could be seen engaged in conversation on a street corner a block from the courthouse. He always seemed to enjoy the subject of politics and was never reluctant to voice his position.

To this day I am amazed at his knowledge and his ability to recall, especially in his later years. I don't recall seeing a computer in his office, then again, with a mind like his, he didn't need one.

Earle always respected his fellow men and women. He said "ma'am," beg your pardon, thank you and please. These are the words we teach our children and grandchildren. He removed his hat in the presence of women and when the National Anthem was played.

I will miss "Mr. Purser." I am proud that he called me friend, and was especially proud to hear him say: "Mr. Mayor, you're doing a good job!" Rest in Peace, Brother Earle.
