SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says suspended quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus would return to the field for opening practice.
Spurrier said by phone Monday that Mangus would coach when the team starts workouts at the Bluff Road practice field on Wednesday night. Mangus was suspended last week when police officers in Greenville caught him peeing in the street. Mangus was charged with nuisance conduct and has a court date on Aug. 26.
Mangus had been in Greenville to attend a gathering of high school coaches. The Greenville Police Department report said Mangus was unsteady on his feet and slurring his words.
Spurrier says athletic director Eric Hyman signed off on Mangus' return.
Mangus is credited with helping improve the on-field performance of South Carolina starting quarterback Stephen Garcia.
ILLINOIS: A University of Illinois football player is due in court in early September after he was charged with drunk driving.
A Champaign County court official said Monday that junior linebacker Ashante Williams will make his initial appearance Sept. 8.
Williams faces two counts of driving under the influence following his arrest Saturday in Urbana. He has not entered a plea and did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment. Court officials did not know if he has an attorney.
The university said Williams has been suspended from the team.
The Mayfield, Ohio, native played in all 13 games last fall and was expected to see heavy playing time this season.
Williams' arrest follows the arrest earlier in July of lineman Chris Jones on aggravated battery charges. He pleaded not guilty.
LOUISIANA STATE: LSU has set a new record for season ticket sales with 68,772 for the 2011 season.
Assistant Athletic Director for ticket operations Brian Broussard, who announced the record on Monday, says LSU surpassed the old mark of 68,650 because of newly added club-level seats in Tiger Stadium that increased overall capacity to 92,542.
LSU places an artificial ceiling on season tickets in order to preserve some parts of the stadium for single-game sales and partial-season plans.
Broussard says demand for LSU season tickets is stronger than ever and requests continue to be higher than the number of season tickets LSU has to offer.
LSU plays the first of six 2011 home games on Sept. 10 against Northwestern State.
TENNESSEE: The returning Tennessee players won't just know their coaches and coordinators this season. They're heading into fall practice with a clear idea of what those coaches expect of them on the field.
Senior tailback Tauren Poole says that will make a big difference to a team that's seen a lot of turnover when it comes to coaching.
When the Volunteers begin fall practice today it will be the first time in four seasons they won't be getting used to either a new head coach or new offensive or defensive coordinator. Associated Press
