An apartment fire Friday morning left 16 people without their homes, according to fire department officials.

The blaze at the Leaves and Trees apartment complex at 1319 Kent Road in Raleigh was reported at 5 a.m., and by the time the first engine arrived, smoke and fire from the roof were visible. Firefighters got control of the fire by 5:30 a.m.

The flames caused extensive damage to eight apartment units, damaging 75 percent of the building and rendering three units completely uninhabitable.

Investigators think it was an arson fire, according to an incident report.

One civilian jumped out of a first-story window and was injured, and one firefighter was injured in a fall. Both were taken to WakeMed hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The displaced residents are in the care of the Red Cross.
