From staff reports

RALEIGH -- Wake Tech Community College is celebrating a $500,000 gift to boost to assist students taking plumbing, heating, welding and other technical courses, the largest cash donation in the school's history.

The donation comes from Harold Brenner, a former executive with Tyco, and his wife Shirley, a North Carolina native who retired with her husband to Cary, said Stephen Scott, Wake Tech president. Both are deceased.

The money is intended for an endowed scholarship fund to aid students enrolling in technical programs that take less than a year to complete.

"Giving scholarships in these areas doesn't happen very often," Scott said. "These students in these areas can go out and find jobs."

The donation will be officially announced at 11:30 a.m. on Wake Tech's main campus.
