Police are still trying to determine why a car went off a road, through a parking lot and into a large pine tree, killing one of the passengers Friday morning.
Lisa Howard Leak of Raleigh was driving west on Chapanoke Road with three passengers when she crossed two on-coming lanes and left the pavement.
Leaks four-door Toyota travelled up a hill, through a parking lot and the corner of a soccer field before hitting the tree, according to a Raleigh police accident report. The car drove between two small trees and between parked vehicles before destroying a soccer goal and hitting the tree head on.
Passenger Amy Pauline Chukwu, 59, of Raleigh was killed, while Alexis Shamira Mae Wall, 17, and Erica Jeannette Freeman, 39, were injured. Chukwu, Wall and Leak lived at the same address in Raleigh, according to the police report.
Leak, 40, Wall and Freeman were taken to WakeMed with serious injuries. Only Leak was wearing a seatbelt, according to the accident report.
