Lazy Daze canceled; it's all Irene's fault

  • The YWCA Block Party and Stand Against Racism scheduled for Saturday in downtown Raleigh has been canceled.

The NCHJA C Outdoor Horse Show at the N.C. State Fairgrounds this weekend has been canceled. The good news is that 500 stalls now are available for sheltering displaced horses. Call 919-839-4701 during business hours for assistance.

Although knowing how to handle a boat could come in handy this weekend, the Falls Lake Crew Team's "learn to row day" scheduled for Saturday at Rolling View Marina on Falls Lake has been canceled.

Jimmy V Golf Classic officials are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Irene and will post information on any changes for Sunday's outdoor activities at www .golfclassic .org.

— For the first time in its 35-year history, the Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival has been canceled. You can blame Hurricane Irene.

Event coordinators consulted with weather forecasters and emergency management officials before making the call to cancel the festival, which had been scheduled for this weekend. Organizers decided staging the festival was too risky because of the potential for unsafe conditions arising from the storm's high winds.

"Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our artists, entertainers, guests, volunteers and workers," festivals coordinator Joy Ennis said.

Organizers were not able to reschedule the festival for another date this year. So the next Lazy Daze will take place a year from now - Aug. 25, 2012.

The town does host a Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival, scheduled for April 28.
