East Carolina Pirates

Published: September 5, 2011

LOST TO NO. 12 SOUTH CAROLINA 56-37

What worked

The Pirates were their usual high-scoring selves, moving the ball consistently on the 12th-ranked Gamecocks and rolling up 345 yards in total offense. Receiver Lance Lewis torched South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore - an All-America candidate - on at least two occasions and finished with 13 catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

What needs work

Two words: Ball security. East Carolina turned the ball over five times. Four of them were fumbles, and one of them was a clean strip of running back Michael Dobson that was returned for a touchdown.

What's next

It certainly doesn't get much easier, with 13th-ranked Virginia Tech - which scored 66 points against Appalachian State on Saturday - coming to Greenville.
