1 year, holding steady

But beware of Chips Ahoy!

Carole Tanzer Miller, features editor, writes: Wednesday was a milestone. One year of weight maintenance under my belt. Well, not under my belt. But you know what I mean.

On Sept. 1, 2010, I reached the first of my goals, weighing in at 145 pounds. By mid-October of last year, I had reached the second, 135. It would be the height of understatement to say that losing 65 pounds was the easy part. It's the absolute truth.

It's been far more difficult to stay within the 5-pound safety zone that caps me at 140 pounds. But that's exactly what I weighed Wednesday morning, at the end of year one. Pause here so I can pat myself on the back. Sweet!

For the rest of my life, it will be a day-to-day battle to keep my weight from inching back up. I struggle to accept that I will never be able to eat as much as I want to eat - unless I become an exercise fiend. And I know myself well enough at age 59 to know that probably won't ever happen. So I'm doing little things to be active - using the stairs (at least until the office elevator is working again), taking walks and parking at the far end of the lot when I shop so I am forced to get movin'.

And after two bags of Chewy Chips Ahoy! arrived in my pantry with the Hurricane Irene supplies and I realized I was powerless to resist, I ate some in the middle of the night, 'fessed up on Facebook and then threw the open bag out. I gave the other one away. If I'm not going to be disciplined, at least I can remove temptation.

In honor of this dietary milestone, I took a walk up and down Fayetteville Street and picked up a cabbage salad topped with chicken for lunch. When I got back to the office, two women were sitting alone in the lobby. I asked if they needed anything, and they said they were being helped, thank you, and then "You're that woman in the newspaper!" one exclaimed, telling me I was lookin' good.

I was just thankful it was a cabbage salad - and NOT contraband cookies - I was toting back to my desk.

Now it's on to Year 2.

Keeping a food record

After days of preparations at work for Hurricane Irene, I can't look back and say that I was very mindful of what I ate during that time. I also can't say that I spent a lot of time exercising. Fortunately, I didn't gain any weight, but I didn't lose any either. Now, I'm trying to write down everything that I eat. I remain against doing any calorie counting, but I think that if I record what was eaten, I can look back and see where I could eat better, thereby reducing a few calories. While I'm at it, I might as well record what exercises I do for the week.

Now if I could just keep the food list shorter than the exercise list ...
