Mike Blumenthal (Uncle Mike) died just five days shy of his 93rd birthday at the Glenaire Community.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Dorothy, with whom he just celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary; his two children, Diane Linen Powell of Washington DC and Marc Blumenthal of Portsmouth, NH; and his grandchild, Annika Blumenthal of Boston, MA.
He was born into one of America's original candy families, "Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate Company of Philadelphia", and was proud of his family's heritage and products including Goobers, Raisinettes and SnoCaps. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the Army Air Corps.
He founded a successful brokerage company, The Candy Men, in New England. A 1939 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Mike was active in alumni affairs, Score (retired executive volunteers) and numerous Elder Hostel programs. Mike was an accomplished photographer, genealogist, and enthusiastic participant with the Glenaire Men's Club, gift shop and resident representation committees.
A memorial celebration of Uncle Mike's life is open to all of his friends and acquaintances at Glenaire's main assembly hall 2 PM Saturday Sept. 10, 2011.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the "Uncle Mike Scholarship Fund" at Glenaire to provide nursing assistants with tuition towards RN certification.
