Clipboard: Duke defense showed promise against Stanford

Published: September 12, 2011

LOST TO NO. 6 STANFORD 44-14

What worked

The Blue Devils' new 4-2-5 scheme has shown promise and given playmakers such as linebacker Kelby Brown, safety Matt Daniels, cornerback Ross Cockrell and lineman Charlie Hatcher opportunities to use their speed and skills. Safety Lee Butler intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown, the result of good coverage by a teammate covering a Stanford receiver on an inside route.

What needs work

Against Stanford, as they did in their season-opening loss to Richmond, the Blue Devils (0-2) struggled to find offensive cohesion. Junior quarterback Sean Renfree was sacked five times.

What's next

Duke moves into ACC play Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with a trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston College.
