No reservation, no ferry ride

Associated PressSeptember 17, 2011

— Changing weather conditions led Dare County officials to issue a mandatory prohibition on visitors without ferry reservations to Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village.

A statement issued Friday said with the suspension of emergency ferry service between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe, supply lines and other infrastructures have been compromised, and that impacts efforts to provide public safety for additional guests who cannot get access to ferry service from Swan Quarter and Cedar Island.

When service is restored, officials said the ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe will only transport critical personnel, insurance adjusters, vendors carrying essential commodities, residents and nonresident property owners. Visitors will not be accommodated on the emergency ferry route.

The state Department of Transportation said service was restored Friday evening.
