Recap: Cleveland vs. Seattle

Mike Carp hit an RBI double and clubbed his first career grand slam through steady rain to highlight a nine-run third inning as the Seattle Mariners pounded the Cleveland Indians, 12-6, at Progressive Field.

Seattle returned to Cleveland on Monday to make up a game that was, coincidentally, rained out in May. The game was called after the seventh inning.

Alex Liddi smashed a two-run homer for the Mariners, who have won three of five.

Seattle starter Charlie Furbush (4-9) notched his first win since August 14 despite allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings. The left-hander, who had lost his last five starts, struck out a career-high eight batters and walked one.

"I was really trying to throw my fastball and keep it down," Furbush said. "It worked pretty well."

Cleveland's David Huff (2-6) absorbed the loss after he was tagged for nine runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.

"Ugly day, disappointing loss. Gave David some runs to work with and unfortunately he had a very rough day," said Cleveland manager Manny Acta.

The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back homers by Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana. But Seattle got on the board in the second when Liddi belted his first career home run and the first by an Italian-born player since Reno Bertoia on August 30, 1961.

Cabrera doubled home Jason Donald before the Mariners teed off against Huff in the third.

Luis Rodriguez reached on an error and scored from first on Carp's double. After Miguel Olivo flied out, Kyle Seager grounded a single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4. A walk and a single loaded the bases for Trayvon Robinson, who put Seattle ahead with a two-run single. Two batters later, Ichiro Suzuki added another run with a two-out double.

Chad Durbin took over on the mound and walked Rodriguez in front of Carp's 11th home run of the season, a deep drive to right field.

Cleveland closed to within 11-6 on a two-run single by Travis Hafner in the fifth before Wily Mo Pena capped the scoring in the next inning with an RBI base hit.
