The morning after Bank of America announced it will start charging customers a fee of $5 a month to use their debit cards, Coastal Federal Credit Union announced it would pay customers to use its cards.

Coastal, which operates 15 branches in the Triangle, will pay its "Go Green" checking customers a 2.51 annual percent yield dividend when 30 or more debit transactions are posted to their accounts each month.

The marketing move comes as many banks are expected to follow Bank of America's lead and begin charging fees to offset new regulations that are expected to hurt bank profits.
