CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina announced contract extensions for three veteran coaches Thursday - including Roy Williams, who will guide the basketball team through 2018.
"(Athletics director Dick Baddour) pretty much knows that I wasn't looking to go anywhere, and I think the last deal was going to finish in (2015), and people start saying, 'Well, how much longer are you going to coach?' " Williams said.
"The security there, to me, was to let everybody know that I plan on being around for a long time. ... My dream, now, is to make sure I last long enough."
New contract details for Williams, women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell and baseball coach Mike Fox were not available. But according to the school:
Williams, whose contract was extended for three more seasons, will be paid the same base salary, $325,000 a year. But his expense allowance will increase from $30,000 to $40,000 a year, beginning in 2012-13. He will also receive supplemental income ranging from $1.35 million to $1.65 million per year, will be eligible for standard bonuses for his team qualifying and advancing through the NCAA tournament, and for equaling or exceeding the NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 960.
Hatchell, who is in her 26th season, now has a contract that runs through 2018. Her base salary will be $360,000, with supplemental compensation ranging from $70,000 to $130,000 per year, and an expense allowance of $40,000. She, too, is eligible to receive standard signing bonuses.
Fox, whose contract also runs through 2018, will earn a base salary of $180,000 in 2011-12, $220,000 in 2012-13, $240,000 in 2013-14, $250,000 in 2014-15 and $260,000 in each of the following three seasons.
His expense allowance will increase from $25,000 to $50,000; he is also eligible for standard bonuses. Fox is in his 14th season at North Carolina.
