Four Tar Heels have legitimate cases for preseason first-team All-ACC votes when the media convenes in Charlotte today for Operation Basketball: senior Tyler Zeller and sophomore Harrison Barnes are the league's top returning scorers; sophomore John Henson is the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year; and sophomore Kendall Marshall led the league in assists last season, making all of his teammates better in the process.
The question is, who will make it?
The ACC doesn't keep long-time records of preseason voting, so it doesn't know if four players from one school have ever made the preseason first team. Miami's Malcolm Grant, Maryland's Terrell Stoglin and Duke freshman Austin Rivers should contend for first-team recognition. Plus, the Tar Heels quartet likely will divide the ballot box - similar to what happened at the end of last season, when all of them earned first-team votes, but not enough to actually make the first team.
The only thing fairly certain today: North Carolina, a Final Four favorite, will be the preseason pick to win the top-heavy league, no matter how many of its players make the first-team.
