From staff reports

BUTNER -- Federal authorities this week arrested a corrections officer on bribery and conspiracy charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has charged Clyon Hinnant, an officer at Butner Federal Correctional Institution, with one felony count each of bribery and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to records filed at the federal magistrate's office in Raleigh.

Hinnant, 38, of Raleigh was taken into custody Sunday and made his first appearance in federal court the next day, court records show.

Denise Simmons, a public information officer with the federal prison, confirmed Wednesday that Hinnant was employed as a corrections officer.

Simmons said no other officers had been charged or reprimanded, but she declined to provide details about Hinnant's arrest, saying the incident was part of an ongoing investigation.

Robin Zier, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Raleigh, also declined comment.
