Amaurys Fermin scored 17 points to lead the Cal Poly Mustangs to a 79-52 victory over the San Jose State Spartans in a non-league affair at Mott Gym.
Will Taylor added a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds for Cal Poly (1-0), while Maliik Love added 12 points as well. Will Donahue contributed 10 points off the bench in the win.
Keith Shamburger netted 13 points for San Jose State (0-1), while Wil Carter posted 12 points in the loss.
The Mustangs went into the break with a 40-27 lead after holding San Jose State to a meager 36.8 percent shooting effort in the opening frame.
In the second stanza, the Mustangs were able to hold on for the win by connecting on 14-of-18 free throw attempts.
Cal Poly was solid defensively, holding the Spartans to a weak 28.6 percent shooting effort.

Trae Golden scored 17 points, Jeronne Maymon added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Tennessee upset No. 8 Florida 75-70 Saturday, ending the Gators' home-winning streak at 19. 
Mike Moser scored 19 points and made a key steal that sent No. 14 UNLV past No. 13 San Diego State 65-63 on Saturday. 
Jeff Withey and Thomas Robinson each logged impressive double-doubles for No. 7 Kansas, which wasted a big chunk of a 29-point second-half cushion before pulling away for an 81-66 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday.
