Carrboro boys' soccer coach Mark Kadlecik switched his lineup around on the eve of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs even though the Jaguars were 19-1-2 and ranked among the best 2A teams in the state.

"It might be seen as a little bit of risk," Kadlecik said, "but I thought we needed a little bit more ball possession in the middle."

Carrboro is at home tonight against East Duplin at 7 p.m. in the 2A Eastern championship.

Last year, East Duplin beat Carrboro 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals, then lost to Shelby on penalty kicks in the 2A state title game.

East Duplin, the East Central 2A champion, opened with a 3-2 win over Croatan, beat Swansboro 2-1 in overtime, Hampstead Topsail 1-0 in overtime and Clinton 3-2 in overtime to reach the semifinals.

Carrboro, the Carolina 12 champ, beat Bartlett-Yancey 6-0 before eliminating league foes Cedar Ridge 5-1, Pittsboro Northwood 3-2 in overtime and Durham Arts 4-0.

Diver to Wolfpack: Charlie Retter, the 2010 NCHSAA 4A diving champion, will go to N.C. State next year.

Retter dominated the state finals last year, piling up 424.10 points.

Gibbons cheerleading: Cardinal Gibbons won the Carolina Cup in the ninth annual NCHSAA state invitational cheerleading championships at the Raleigh Convention Center last weekend.

Gibbons won the large varsity division with a score of 130.75, the highest in any division in the competition.

East Bend Forbush had a 128.4 to win the large varsity non-tumble division, and Middle Creek scored 126.95 points to take the medium varsity category.

Field hockey: East Chapel Hill (19-2) defeated Winston-Salem Reynolds 1-0 on Saturday to claim a fourth consecutive N.C. Field Hockey Association championship.

Margo Richardson scored with two minutes left off an assist from Marissa Creatore.

Lees-McRae soccer: Four former area high school soccer players helped Lees-McRae College to the second round of the NCAA Division II men's playoffs. The team was eliminated in overtime by Flagler last week 2-1.

Freshman Andrew Shoemaker of Athens Drive, freshman Scott Alford of Northern Durham, freshman Ryan Gillespie of Holly Springs and freshman T.C. Stephens of Fuquay-Varina were regulars in the starting lineup. Lees-McRae is coached by Lee Squires, who was the captain of last year's Lees-McRae squad.

Dupree honored: Tucker Dupree, a former swimmer at Garner High, has been named the Roger McCarville Male Athlete of the Year by the Disabilities Hall of Fame. Dupree was diagnosed with Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy and lost much of his vision while still in high school.

He won a silver and four bronze medals at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands. In Paralympic competition, Dupree holds two world records, 36 American records and seven Pan-American Records and is ranked third in the world in five events.

Southern coach: Nikki Bynum, a former Southern Durham High coach, recently coached St. Augustine's College to the CIAA volleyball championship.
