Piedmont International Baccalaureate Middle Principal Dee Gardner was one of seven school leaders honored in Washington D.C. earlier this week.

Gardner received the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding Leadership from the U.S. Department of Education. In a news release, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said Gardner was recognized for her work in moving Piedmont from under-performing to high-performing.

The district said Piedmont was one of its top-achievement schools on standardized test reports, and was named a National Blue Ribbon school this fall for overall academic excellence.

"I am honored to receive this national award and have the opportunity to meet with leaders from other award-winning Blue Ribbon schools," Gardner said in a CMS news release. "When we pool our knowledge and experiences about educating our young people, everyone wins."
