Red Hat's top sales executive has been named CEO of Acronis, a privately held data protection software company based in Massachusetts that generated $125 million in sales last year.

Raleigh-based Red Hat disclosed last week that Alex Pinchev, executive vice president of sales, services and field marketing, was leaving in January to become CEO of a privately held company that is "an ecosystem partner of Red Hat." But it didn't identify the business.

Pinchev is succeeding Acronis CEO Jason Donahue, who has led the company since 2008, on Jan. 17. Pinchev already is familiar with the business, having joined the Acronis board of directors 12 months ago.

Acronis has about 700 employees and generated $125.3 million in revenue last year, up from $112.1 million in 2009, according to Inc. magazine.

"With a successful business in data protection and disaster recovery solutions for physical, virtual and cloud environments, Acronis now has the opportunity to further develop its routes-to-market and expand its technology presence," Pinchev said in a prepared statement.

Pinchev is assisting Red Hat with the company's search for his successor. The Red Hat sales team under his leadership has won high marks from analysts.
