About the Garner football team

FROM STAFF REPORTSDecember 3, 2011

Garner is 15-0 and plays Greensboro Page (14-0) for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4AA football championship at 3 p.m. today at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem.

The Garner football team has been in the state playoffs for 26 straight years. The Trojans won a state championship in 1987 and played for the state title in 1998.

The 1987 Garner team was the last Wake County school to win a NCHSAA state football championship.

Garner averages 46.5 points per game. Last week, Garner scored in the closing minutes to take a 34-27 victory over Fayetteville's Jack Britt High.

Garner's student cheering section is known as the Blue Crew. The most famous member of the Blue Crew is Scotty McCreery, who won "American Idol" last spring. McCreery usually sits on the front row of the student section and in the past has left the stands to go near the field to lead cheers. No spectators will be allowed on field level during the state finals at BB&T Field.

Garner's boys basketball team has been successful, too. The 2010-11 team finished with a 26-1 record.

Garner football coach Nelson Smith has a 131-27 career coaching record since becoming head coach in 2000. He had been an assistant coach at the school since 1983. He played college football at East Carolina University.
