Leesville Road's Caroline Gentry and Ravenscroft's Cameron Castleberry have been named to the All-America girls' soccer team by the National Soccer Coaches of America.
Gentry, who is committed to N.C. State, had 27 goals and 23 assists in leading Leesville Road to a 24-1-1 record in 2011 and to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A championship. She also has been named as the state player of the year by the NSCAA and the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association.
"She is Leesville's first female All-America and only the second All-American in school history," joining basketball standout Anthony Richardson, said Leesville Road coach Paul Dinkenor. "She is a fearless competitor, which is a great asset for a striker.
"Caroline is a great athlete with tremendous skills."
Castleberry, who is going to North Carolina, had 25 goals and 10 assists for an 18-2-1 team that lost in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A title game.
"Cameron is a very talented player," said Ravenscroft coach J.J. Raabe, "She works very hard on the field and has great field sense. Once she gets the ball, it almost always results in some type of scoring opportunity for us."
Girls' basketball: Millbrook, which reached the NCHSAA 4A girls' basketball championship game last season, is off to a 6-0 start. The Wildcats' closest game has been a 66-29 win against New Hanover last weekend.
Junior Briana Day, a North Carolina recruit, leads Millbrook with 11 points per game. The Wildcats are averaging 65.8 points per game.
The Green Hope girls won their first four games behind the scoring of Kristen Gaffney. The Vanderbilt recruit is averaging 29.5 points per game.
Owino to Tar Heels: Desmond Owino, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound Sanderson High defensive end, committed to North Carolina. Owino is from Kenya and had not played football until the 2010 season.
"He has the opportunity to do very well," said Sanderson coach Tony Lewis. "He has all of the physical attributes that you need and has drive and determination. His upside is tremendous."
Garner leftover s: Versatile runner Juwan Moye and linebacker Gavin Wilson picked up the most outstanding player awards for Garner in Saturday's 35-21 4AA state football championship game loss to Greensboro Page.
The 5-8, 153-pound Moye rushed for 153 yards and scored twice. He rushed for 2,158 yards and had 463 yards in receptions during the Trojans' 15-1 season.
Wilson had 5 1/2 tackles, including a sack of Page quarterback James Summers, and two tackles for losses Saturday afternoon.
Moye and Wilson are among the 28 seniors on this year's club. Garner is expected to return five starters on defense and six starters on offense, including quarterback Vincent Jefferies, receiver Brayden Sims and tight end Tim Thorb.
