Day 1: Changes in health care spark a feud between Rex, WakeMed

1894

Rex is founded with money bequeathed by the estate of John Rex.

1961

WakeMed, created by the Wake County government, opens its doors to patients.

1996

The board of directors decides to sell Rex to another hospital system. WakeMed expresses interest.

1998

The state legislature creates UNC Health Care, which includes UNC Hospitals. The system has more control to negotiate deals and buy property.

2000

UNC Health Care buys Rex for $100 million.
