June 15: Rex applies for a heart tower, signaling its efforts to compete for cardiology.
September: Wake Heart cardiologists strike a deal to affiliate with Rex and UNC Health Care.
Oct. 22: The WakeMed board first discusses the possibility of buying Rex.
Dec. 21: WakeMed and Rex board leaders meet to discuss hard feelings. Atkinson and Roper exchange words.

March 12: Roper invites Atkinson to meet to discuss their differences.
