RALEIGH -- The city will not take action against an Occupy Raleigh encampment on private land near downtown.

A review by the city attorney's office found the camp does not violate zoning restrictions for the site, Mayor Nancy McFarlane said.

The property owner gave permission for the tent village, which sits on an unpaved triangular lot where Hillsborough, Edenton and West streets come together four blocks west of the state Capitol.

Since opening on Thanksgiving, the camp just off Hillsborough Street has expanded to include a makeshift library, kitchen, social area and portable toilet. The site this week had more than a dozen tents.

The new location represents a good outcome, McFarlane said.
