— Durham police are on the scene of a body found in Parkwood Lake in southern Durham late this afternoon.

A passerby reported what appeared to be human remains in the lake at about 3:55 p.m. today, said Sgt. Bill Johnson, the watch commander.

Johnson said police responded to the 5550 block of Pelham Road. He said he could not say whether the body was that of a man or woman and said he had no additional details to release.

Johnson also said he could not say whether the body might be that of a Durham woman who has not been seen since Dec. 9 and whose car was found near the lake Dec. 12.

A vehicle belonging to Margaret A. Lewis was found abandoned at Pelham Road and Hadley Lane, near Parkwood Lake. Lewis lives on nearby Revere Road.

Police describe Lewis, 58, as white, 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 95 pounds. She has black hair and blue eyes. Earlier this month, police asked anyone with information about Lewis' whereabouts to call investigators at 919-560-4440, ext. 29332, or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
