Woman vanishes in Cape Fear

Associated PressDecember 26, 2011

— Police are searching for a homeless woman who was swept away after deciding to go for a swim in the Cape Fear River.

Police say the 44-year-old woman stripped down to her underwear and went for a swim near the Person Street Bridge on Friday. They have not released her name.

Rescue teams were unable to find the woman over the weekend.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that the woman had been staying at a camp with other homeless people under the bridge. Other people at the camp say she was agitated the night before she decided to go for a swim.

Firefighters launched a boat while the Police Department's dive team searched using sonar, but neither was able to find the woman immediately.
