Two days after ending the season with a 41-24 loss against Missouri in the Independence Bowl, North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner on Wednesday underwent successful surgery on his left ankle, the university announced.
During the procedure, which took place at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Dr. Bob Anderson removed an anterior bone spur and a posterior accessory bone from Renners ankle. Renner, a sophomore, is expected to make a complete recovery and UNC expects to update his status at the beginning of spring practice.
The UNC sports medicine staff detected an issue with Renners ankle in mid-July, before the start of the Tar Heels preseason practice. After consulting with medical personnel, Renner and his family decided to postpone his surgery until after the season.
To protect his ankle, Renner played with a hinged ankle brace this season. He passed for 3,086 yards and 26 touchdowns, which set a single-season school record.
While Renner recovers from his surgery, two other UNC players will undergo surgeries of their own in the coming weeks. Sophomore linebacker Darius Lipford and junior defensive end Donte Paige-Moss both tore knee ligaments during the Heels loss in the Independence Bowl.
Lipford suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, and Paige-Moss tore the ACL in his left knee. Both players will miss spring practice.
