RALEIGH -- Federal marshals arrested a 40-year-old man in New York on charges that he was one of four men who gang-raped a woman last year at the College Inn student apartments on Western Boulevard.

Members of the U.S. Marshal Service Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Burt Nathan Hinkson, 40, of Mastic, N.Y., Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue spokesman said today.

Hinkson has been charged with one felony count each for first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense and kidnapping, a Wake County Jail spokeswoman said this afternoon.

Police previously charged three other men, Jelani Ajani Atsu Idesle Allen and Brian Marvin Carridice, both 21, and Dwayne Anthony Riley, 22, with first-degree rape and first-degree sex offense. Allen was a senior at NCSU at the time of his arrest, court records show.

Police were alerted about the alleged sexual assault in early September. Raleigh Detective A.J. Doughty stated in a search warrant that he visited the N.C. State campus where a woman reported that she had been sexually assaulted late on a week night through the early morning hours.

The woman told Doughty that she accepted a ride from Carridice from downtown Raleigh. The woman told police that Carridice and a second man in the car traveled to 2717 Western Blvd., where they met Allen in a third-floor room. The woman told police Carridice, Allen and two other men sexually assaulted her while holding her down against her will, court records show.

Officers with the City County Bureau of Identification arrived at the room and took the bed linens. They also found open condom wrappers and used condoms, Doughty stated in the court affidavit.

Investigators obtained two more search warrants that enabled them to gather DNA samples to compare with the evidence collected in the room, court records show.

Carridice, who lives at 3041 Richward Place in Raleigh, remains in custody at the Wake County jail in lieu of $600,000 bail. State records show that Carridice has previous criminal convictions for drug violations, resisting an officer and breaking and entering.

Riley is in custody under $500,000 bail, the spokeswoman said. Allen was released shortly after his arrest when he posted a 50,000 secured bond. In court papers requesting a reduction of Allen's bail, defense lawyer A. Patrick Roberts stated that Allen had no prior criminal history and was majoring in computer science.

Hinkson is being held under $250,000 bail, the jail spokeswoman reported.
