Duke's women's soccer coach Robbie Church received his second national coach of the year award on Thursday after being named the Division I coach of the year at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NCSAA) Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
Church was also named the Soccer America coach of the year last month, after guiding the Blue Devils to their first NCAA College Cup appearance since 1992, , before falling in the title match to top-ranked Stanford 1-0.
Duke won a school-record 22 games, including 8 during ACC play to claim the school's second ACC regular-season title.
Under Church, who just completed his 11th season at Duke, the Blue Devils doubled their 2010 win total and became the second school in ACC history to reach 20 wins in a season.
North Carolina stands in third place nationally and is one of four ACC schools in the Top 10 after the final fall standings in the Directors' Cup that were released Thursday by the National Association of the Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
The Tar Heels compiled 329 points in the fall and trail only Stanford (382) and Florida State (351). UNC's fall programs were led by the men's soccer national championship and a national runner-up finish in field hockey. Women's soccer tied for ninth place, volleyball tied for 17th and football was 44th. Rounding out the top 10 this year are UCLA, Michigan, Penn State, Oklahoma State, Maryland, Duke and Texas.
Duke's athletics program stands in ninth place.
Overall, Duke has 225 points and ranks second among private institutions behind only Stanford. Four ACC schools are ranked in the top 10.
Duke also was in ninth place at this point last year in the final fall standings. The Blue Devils ended up with a fifth-place finish - matching the best showing in school history - in 2010-11. Last year, Carolina finished sixth in the Directors' Cup. It was UNC's third straight top-10 finish and the ninth top-10 finish in the last decade.
North Carolina will take to the road this weekend as they travel to Hampton, Va., for the Virginia Duals. The Tar Heels open competition today at 11 a.m. and will take on Rider before facing Edinboro or Drexel in the second round.
The Tar Heels are coming off a 30-5 rout of Duke on Monday and improved to 1-7 on the year in duals.
Rider owns a 4-4 dual record on the year with wins over Army, Princeton, Old Dominion and Brown.
