Be a part of art
There's nothing passive about "Born Digital," the new exhibit opening Saturday at CAM Raleigh.
All 18 artworks hinge on visitor interaction, including Durham artist Daniel Rozin's "Snow Mirror; Jacob Ciocci's largest-ever work, "Copy Cat;" and Katolina Sobecka's "Sniff."
"The 21st century is about artists suggesting new ways of experiencing," said Elysia Borowy-Reeder, exhibit curator and executive director of the contemporary art museum. "The exhibition implores visitors to look at action and reaction, at our physical relationships, as critical experience."
Twelve digital and new media art pioneers are featured exhibitors. They use digital video cameras and custom software to make their art respond to bodies, colors and motion. As visitors walk by "Sniff," for instance, their movements and gestures are tracked, and a computer-generated dog dynamically changes its behavior in response. Rozin's "Snow Mirror" reveals visitors in what appears to be falling snow.
Another installation, R. Luke DuBois' "A More Perfect Union" is a commentary on self-identity, illustrated in a series of maps.
The exhibit is one of two that will open Saturday and remain on display through April 30. The other is "Dancer," a video presentation by Miami artist Dara Friedman.
CAM Raleigh is open from noon to 5 p.m. weekends; from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and late on the first and third Fridays of each month. It is located at 409 W. Martin St. in downtown Raleigh. General admission is $5.
