I was angered when I read the Jan. 21 article "Visitor on Dix Park delay: 'Shame on you'." My daughter committed suicide on Jan. 28, 2011 at the age of 26. She suffered with bipolar and borderline personality disorders. She was a frequent patient at Dorothy Dix Psychiatric Hospital. It was her refuge. I wholeheartedly believe that, if the hospital and caring staff that knew her and her situation so well had been available, she would be alive today.
Being more worried about a "signature park" helping Raleigh to become "hip and forward-looking" than desperately sick people having resources is simply a sad statement. Dorothy Dix said "A man usually values that most for which he has labored; he uses that most frugally which he has toiled hour by hour and day by day to acquire." To all those who value a park over the suffering of the mentally ill, I say "Shame on you."
