When Kathleen Edwards first emerged a decade ago, it was hard to imagine she'd ever escape Lucinda Williams' shadow. But the Canadian singer/songwriter long ago transcended such comparisons, forging a distinctive artistic identity with music as vivid as it is coldly beautiful. Her new album "Voyageur" (Zoe/Rounder Records) benefits from production by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who contributes to the cool ambience with his customary atmospheric textures. Edwards plays Tuesday at Carrboro's Cat's Cradle, on a bill with Hannah Georgas. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20 advance, $23 day of show. See catscradle.com for details.

Tonight: Old 97's rock up the Cradle; next door at the Carrboro ArtsCenter is the release party for "Hymns From the Gathering," featuring Mount Moriah's Heather McEntire, Megafaun's Phil Cook and others; and Anne Egge sings at St. Philips Episcopal Church, a benefit for Urban Ministries of Durham.

Saturday brings Squirrel Nut Zippers co-founder Jimbo Mathus' Tri-State Coalition to Chapel Hill's Local 506, Yarn to Raleigh's Lincoln Theatre, Acoustic Syndicate to the Cradle and soulful pianist Gabe Dixon to Raleigh's Pour House; Robert Earl Keen, whose way with a joke is as keen as his way with a song, is at the Lincoln on Sunday; Kelly Clarkson brings that big voice of hers to Durham Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, the same night that Staind's Aaron Lewis plays solo acoustic (!) across town at the Carolina Theatre and the Green Day musical "American Idiot" opens at Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium.
