Tar Heels picked first in ACC baseball

North Carolina was selected as the ACC baseball preseason favorite in a vote of the league's 12 head coaches.

The Tar Heels were named by seven coaches as this year's ACC team to beat. Georgia Tech received four first-place votes and Florida State one.

UNC, coming off its fifth College World Series appearance in six years, was also picked by seven coaches to win the Coastal Division. Georgia Tech received four first-place votes and one coach picked Miami.

Clemson was picked as the Atlantic Division favorite. The Tigers received seven first-place votes, with the other five going to Florida State.

North Carolina was followed in the Coastal Division voting by Georgia Tech. Miami and defending ACC champion Virginia tied for third place, followed by Virginia Tech and Duke.

Clemson and Florida State were picked to finish first and second in the Atlantic Division, followed by N.C. State, Wake Forest, Maryland and Boston College.

North Carolina is ranked third in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers preseason poll released Friday.

Lacrosse

Duke coach Kerstin Kimel announced the addition of Caline McHenry Olmsted as a volunteer assistant coach Friday. The former Duke standout will be involved in all aspects of the program and work directly with the team's defensive unit.

Swimming and Diving

The N.C. State men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Clemson at home Friday night.

The men (8-1, 5-1 ACC) defeated the Tigers 149-83.

The women (8-3, 3-3) won 141-98.

Track and Field

Senior Danille Brock led Carolina with a win in the women's 60-meter hurdles on the first day of the UNC Invitational. Brock took first in the hurdles with a time of 8.52, as junior.

Junior Chrishawn Williams finished second in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 7 inches.

Men's Tennis

N.C. State suffered its first loss of the season in a 4-0 setback to Kentucky in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Lexington Friday afternoon.

Women's tennis

N.C. State fell to Tulsa 4-1 at the ITA Kickoff at Knoxville Friday.

Elisha Hande defeated Isaura Enrique 6-4, 6-4 for the Wolfpack's lone win.
