GREENSBORO -- -- Buoyed by a lack of competition, former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory will launch his run for governor today with a campaign-opening event in Guilford County.
McCrory, a Republican who lost a close race for governor in 2008 to Democrat Bev Perdue, has chosen Guilford County to start the race because it is where he spent many of his childhood years, he told reporters.
But McCrory's campaign schedule in the first two days will stress his effort to portray himself as a statewide candidate, rather than "Charlotte's former mayor." On Wednesday, he is scheduled to appear in Hendersonville, New Bern and Wilmington.
