From staff reports

Many Wake County elementary schools will hold special events today to encourage families to register for kindergarten for the 2012-13 school year.

School officials want families to register so they can submit their school options under the new choice-based student assignment plan. School officials say that 7,710 of the projected 12,000 kindergarten students have already registered.

In order to attend kindergarten, a child must be 5 on or before Aug. 31.

Gifted children who are 4 by April 16 also will be considered for admission.

To enroll, parents of rising kindergartners should bring their child's birth certificate, parent/guardian photo ID, proof of address in the form of a water, electric or gas bill or a signed lease or rental agreement, and their child's immunization record.

Children do not need to be present for the enrollment process. You can find more at assignment.wcpss.net.
